This term we have been using Lego and Duplo blocks in our maths sessions.
We worked out that one square block is equal to one. The rectangle blocks are equal to two. Each group of four is equal to one. We built things and had to work out what number they showed. This picture shows the number seven.
The blocks helped us practise our counting. It was hard at first. We were given a number and we had to show that number using our blocks. We learnt that we can rearrange the blocks and still show the same number. We can stack three square blocks to show 3, or we can put a square block on a rectangle block and show 3 that way.

When the weather in Malmsbury turned cold and stormy rather abruptly last term the Prep-One All Stars decided to test their writing skills and write some weather similes. There was a lot of discussion about how wet the rain might be and whether wind that is as wild as a tiger would be worse than wind as wild as a snake. Here are our finished weather poems.

Grade Prep/One have been showing off their writing expertise this week. We have been learning how to compare two things using similes and have been creating some great imagery in our writing sessions.
We started thinking about how we could describe an ice-cream…
Then we worked out ways to describe our favourite soft toys.
Then we had a go at writing our own.

Melbourne has the race that stops the nation – the Melbourne Cup.
Soccer has the game that keeps the whole world up late – the World Cup.
Malmsbury Primary has the event that pits great thinkers against each other – the Malmsbury Mind Cup.
On Friday November 9th, the whole school gathered to compete in the first annual Malmsbury Mind Cup. Students challenged each other in chess, checkers, naughts and crosses and One, two! In our class we also played Chinese Checkers, Paddocks and giant Snakes and Ladders. Here is what Grade Prep/One had to say about the day…
It was fun doing the Malmsbury Cup because we got to play the big Snakes and Ladders game. I liked playing the biggest Snakes and Ladders in the whole world.
I liked the big Snakes and Ladders because you got a dice to play with.
We liked Checkers because it was a fun game. Noah and Brandan played together, it was the first time we played. Eliza and I played Checkers and I won the third and Eliza won the third game.
I think Checkers is the best game in the whole wide world.
I liked playing Pick Up Sticks because it was really fun picking up the sticks and trying not to move the other sticks.
I think it was fun playing Paddocks with Rosie because it was lots of fun. It was fun when we counted the Paddocks to see how many we had.
I think kids were playing board games well.
I liked the Malmsbury Mind Cup because it was fun.
I liked playing games with Brodie. We played Snakes and Ladders.
PLaying Paddocks was fun because you can make up lots of paddocks.
Chinese Checkers is the best game in the whole wide world because I love it.
I liked losing every single game.

On Monday we did some Maths investigation. Here are some of the things we noticed.
I thought Eliza’s thing was really amazing.
I saw Ceanna doing a good job making a pattern on the abacus.
I saw Isha thinking about what pattern she might do on the abacus.

My patterns went up and down – Eliza
I tried to think about how I could make shapes and numbers with the tangrams. I was thinking about what shapes to use. -Rosie

Today we have done some story writing. We have been voting on the names of the three teddies that are in our room. Some people felt happy about the names but other people felt a bit upset because their names didn’t get voted for. We also did some alphabet work. We got all the letters that start at the top, not at the bottom. These are letters in the ‘c’ family. We all felt good about our handwriting today. We also played the monkey game. This is a popcorn monkey game. We had to guess the word and push the button to give the monkey popcorn. There were different levels that we played.

Eliza’s lamb came to our school today. Eliza’s mum was giving it milk. It didn’t stop sucking it’s bottle until it was empty. It even kept sucking the bottle when it was empty. We patted it. We also saw a turtle pet today.
Today school was awesome. Today was a fun day for most of us.
