A reflection of our week – 17 June 2013

It has been a very busy week in the Prep-One room.  Here are some reflections on our week…

In our writing we have been planning a story book.  This makes some of us feel happy because we like writing.  Some of us are excited to make a book because now we now know how to tell a story we can tell lots more.

We finished our heart maps, which most of us really enjoyed making.   They show what we love.  We are going to put these on the Great Wall of Awesome and use them to get ideas for our writing.

Molly, Rosie and Natalie have been selling rocks this week.  Some people put on funny shows to get more people to buy rocks.  All the money goes to the Parent’s Club and the guide Dogs.  They raised a huge $44!

In Art we have been painting without paintbrushes.  We have been using palette knives, pipettes and drinking straws and things from nature.  It has been fun and exciting because we didn’t know we could paint without paintbrushes.  Most of us love painting with a palette knife.  We feel very creative.

In French we have been talking about to say ‘hello’ goodbye’ and ‘how are you feeling?’ in French.  We are also learning how to introduce ourselves and where we live.  French makes us excited because it is really fun.

Almost all the All-Stars really enjoyed this week.

What did you enjoy most this week at school?

Tell us one thing you are really proud of achieving this week.

Prep One All-Stars join the Great Wall of Awesome!

This term Prep One joined the Great Wall of Awesome – an online space where classes from different schools share and celebrate their awesomeness.  First we read a story called ‘The Great Wall of Awesome’ about a class that had a drab, dull wall in their classroom and they brightened it up with examples of their awesomeness.  We also had a look at  pages from other classes – there is some incredibly awesome learning happening out there!

The All-Stars are very excited about sharing their awesomeness with the world – they had lots of suggestions for what we put could post on our page.  We brainstormed some of the things we could include – you can see it below.  We decided that rainbows and cakes and Trash Packs, although nice things and fun things, were not really great examples of our awesomeness.  Instead we talked about how we might post work we have been doing and photos of some of the awesome things we get up to in and out of our classroom.

Stay tuned to our blog AND our Great Wall of Awesome to keep track of the awesome learning happening in our class.  You can see our page at this address:  https://thegreatwallofawesome.squarespace.com/p1-mps

What do you think we should put on our Great Wall of Awesome?

If you had a Great Wall of Awesome all your own, what would you put on it?

All-Stars 2013!

New Preps enjoying the play equipment.

Welcome to another fantastic year with the Grade Prep/One All-Stars!

We have had a great beginning to our school year and everyone has been very busy learning how to work together.  The Preps have been working hard to settle in to school and are all confident in the classroom and the playground.  Meanwhile, the Grade Ones are taking their responsibility as role models very seriously and are helping the Preps understand all the important things about school – how to pack up the classroom, how the Ladder works, where to hide  your Lego cars for another day’s play and of course the best games to play in the playground!

Last week the Preps had their first full week of school – it was a bit tiring for everyone!  The Grade Ones also had a big week, they had a very exciting time on the Grade 1/2 Camp to Discovery Centre.  Thanks to Carolyn and Madame Sam for their fantastic effort on Camp.

What have you enjoyed most about starting Grade Prep OR Grade One this year?

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Flat Friends are having a great time!

Hello to all our travelling Flat Friends and your Hosts.

We hope you are having some fantastic adventures while you are out travelling the world – we love seeing what you have been doing. The Flat Friends visiting Malmsbury are certainly having fun. They have been enjoying visiting some of our homes – fishing, bush walking, shopping at the local Farmer’s Market, apparently one Flat Friend has even been spotted driving a tractor at a local farm! They have also enjoyed some interesting experiences while at school – they all took part in a Gypsy music workshop last week and heard some awesome Aboriginal stories today.

We are working on some photo stories showing what your Flat’s have been up to, they will start to appear on our blog (and the Grade 1/2 blog – follow the link from our home page) in the coming days. Please keep checking our blog to find out what your Flat Friend is doing and to meet our other Flat visitors. We have seven Flat Friends visiting at the moment and we are expecting some more soon.

The Flat People we sent out into the world seem to be having fun. We have heard from Flat Bill, a policeman who travelled to Taiwan and we will soon be looking at some photos of Flat Bluebell on her visit to Gowanda, New York.

You can see Flat Bill in Taiwan here: http://taiwanstanley.wordpress.com/class-4/#comments

What place or experience would you share with a visiting Flat Friend?

If you had to choose one souvenir for a Flat visitor to take home what would you choose?

The Malmsbury Mind Cup versus the Kids

Melbourne has the race that stops the nation – the Melbourne Cup.
Soccer has the game that keeps the whole world up late – the World Cup.
Malmsbury Primary has the event that pits great thinkers against each other – the Malmsbury Mind Cup.

On Friday November 9th, the whole school gathered to compete in the first annual Malmsbury Mind Cup. Students challenged each other in chess, checkers, naughts and crosses and One, two! In our class we also played Chinese Checkers, Paddocks and giant Snakes and Ladders. Here is what Grade Prep/One had to say about the day…

It was fun doing the Malmsbury Cup because we got to play the big Snakes and Ladders game. I liked playing the biggest Snakes and Ladders in the whole world.
I liked the big Snakes and Ladders because you got a dice to play with.
We liked Checkers because it was a fun game. Noah and Brandan played together, it was the first time we played. Eliza and I played Checkers and I won the third and Eliza won the third game.
I think Checkers is the best game in the whole wide world.
I liked playing Pick Up Sticks because it was really fun picking up the sticks and trying not to move the other sticks.
I think it was fun playing Paddocks with Rosie because it was lots of fun. It was fun when we counted the Paddocks to see how many we had.
I think kids were playing board games well.
I liked the Malmsbury Mind Cup because it was fun.
I liked playing games with Brodie. We played Snakes and Ladders.
PLaying Paddocks was fun because you can make up lots of paddocks.
Chinese Checkers is the best game in the whole wide world because I love it.
I liked losing every single game.
The Malmsbury Mind Cup was fun because we got to play lots of games.

Something interesting in maths today…

On Monday we did some Maths investigation. Here are some of the things we noticed.

I thought Eliza’s thing was really amazing.

I saw Ceanna doing a good job making a pattern on the abacus.

I saw Isha thinking about what pattern she might do on the abacus.

I saw Molly thinking about numbers

My patterns went up and down – Eliza

I tried to think about how I could make shapes and numbers with the tangrams. I was thinking about what shapes to use. -Rosie

I was working on the whiteboards and doing number patterns, writing where the numbers go. _Erin

I was working on the scale to make sure the weights were balancing and not balancing. – Molly

I was sorting out the numbers and practising counting up to big numbers. Brandan

My pattern (on the abacus) had gaps in the middle. – Ceanna

I was making patterns on the abacus. – Isha

I was making sure that the shapes fitted together with the tangrams. – Natalia

Here are some of the things we were doing:

A lovely day at school

Today we have done some story writing.  We have been voting on the names of the three teddies that are in our room. Some people felt happy about the names but other people felt a bit upset because their names didn’t get voted for.  We also did some alphabet work. We got all the letters that start at the top, not at the bottom. These are letters in the ‘c’ family. We all felt good about our handwriting today.  We also played the monkey game. This is a popcorn monkey game. We had to guess the word and push the button to give the monkey popcorn. There were different levels that we played.

You can play it here http://www.fun4thebrain.com/English/popcornWords.html

Eliza’s lamb came to our school today. Eliza’s mum was giving it milk.  It didn’t stop sucking it’s bottle until it was empty.  It even kept sucking the bottle when it was empty. We patted it. We also saw a turtle pet today.

Today school was awesome. Today was a fun day for most of us.
